My counselling approach

My particular attitude to counselling and psychotherapy

My approach respects, affirms and is interested in the other person’s individual and unique way of being in the world; I am excited by difference and diversity. It is generally recognised that the relationship between client and practitioner is central to the therapeutic process. I will endeavour to be with you in a way that helps to create a climate or atmosphere of safety, support and perhaps challenge in which you feel free to communicate your concerns or difficulties. In these circumstances, you are likely to gain understanding and become more aware of yourself, your situation, and your patterns, and ways in which you are can support yourself more effectively. From this awareness, I believe that new choices and possibilities for change will emerge.

My training has been particularly in Gestalt psychotherapy which works with the whole person (thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, intuition, any spiritual beliefs, and behaviour) with a contextual perspective. My practice is underpinned by humanistic values and based on a holistic philosophy of life. My ongoing professional development includes further training in relational theory and practice, as well as regular consultative and peer supervision of my work.
